Fighting the blues

You cannot prevent the birds of sadness from passing over your head, but you can prevent their making a nest in your hair.

We all get sad sometimes. I can feel it coming...days when I don't automatically sing in the shower are always, bar none, down days. I had a couple of difficult days recently. I have a pretty long fuse, and it takes quite a long to get me mad. Or my fuse is inconceivably short, and I start yelling and crying for no reason. This is why if you had been in Wal Mart - Baie Comeau on Monday, you would have heard me yelling at my host brother, and I quote, 'But the tap water tastes like ass.'
Very classy.
This does not mean we have to stay down/sad/shouty. Here's what I did to calm the fluff down:
  • Eat something you like with a cup of tea. Be careful with this one. One chocolate bar is okay. One huge chocolate bar within five minutes is not okay. I like to eat frozen berries, which not only taste yummy, but I can eat loads and then not feel bad for having consumed a weeks worth of calories. Sit down with your snack, and a pot of tea, and relax.
  • Put on something that makes you feel sexy. The words sexy and lolita don't often come in the same sentence. However, the power of feeling sexy is something that surprises me everytime. I went for a mans shirt, with a pair of tights, sky scraper shoes and a tiara. No, not necessarily a winning match, but I felt like a goddess and that's what we're aiming for.
  • Pump up the volume. Choose some music you love to dance to and whack up the sound. Jiggle around in your sexy outfit.
  • Talk to yourself! You may feel a little silly, but talking to yourself is a great way of working out your problems out loud. Be brutally honest. If it's a specific problem that's making you feel down, talk through some solutions with yourself. Give yourself a pep talk. Remember: you're beautiful, you're clever, you're funny, you're talented, you're sexy, YOU'RE A PRINCESS. Look in the mirror and keep repeating it until it sounds true. Add any others that you feel apply (I like 'I'm strong' and 'I'm healthy' also).
The last stage is something I do everyday. However, I do this in my underwear just after moisturising and just before doing my hair and make-up. I choose a flattering position, and I appreciate the natural, flawed me.

Because I'm not perfect, but I wouldn't want to be.
